In response to Carthaginian expansion, the Roman Republic, by this point & contrary to your account, several centuries old, accelerated it’s own expansion beyond Italy. Thus, Hannibal’s defeat in this 2nd Punic War, & Carthage’s eventual destruction in the next, 3rd, & final Punic war w Rome, led to the Roman Republic becoming an Empire while simultaneously, in many important ways, remaining a republic for centuries longer–somewhat as would Venice, later the Netherlands, & as we (the US) seem currently to be doing.
